County Round Up - Week 3

A week which was wetter than an otter’s pocket ended with rain the victor across most of the country.

Onions...brought a tear to Andrew Strauss' eye

County Champions Lancashire suffered their second defeat in as many games, Warwickshire nervously chasing down 70 to win the game. Highlights included a first ton from Darren Maddy since 2008 and a superb 140 from Rikki Clarke down at number 9!

At The Middle Stump we love Graham Onions; shallot. The former England swinger* certainly made his former International captain Andrew Strauss cry, dismissing him in both innings. Durham ended up clinging on for a draw against Middlesex. Chasing 130 for the win they were halted to 82/6 with Steven Finn showing his class taking 4/43.

It rained a lot at the Oval. They drew with Worcestershire. Chris Adams must be thrilled.

At Trent Bridge, captain Christopher Reed got 104 out of 162 in the first innings against Somerset. The boys from the west country didnt find it as tough, racking up 445/2. The one man western rock band, Nick Compton or Comp dog as the cool kids are calling him, getting a sublime 204 not out. Somerset picked up a more than useful 11 points.

In Division 2, Derbyshire against Leicestershire fizzled out to a draw, Gloucestershire and Kent also shared the spoils at Canterbury. Essex and Yorkshire also had to settle for a draw at Headingley. Ravi Bopara finding some England form with an unbeaten 117 for the visitors cancelling out Yorkshire’s non overseas, overseas Phil Jacques’ 126. Reports that Wollongong is just outside Barnsley have not been confirmed.

Glamorgan have now lost three out of three. The Middle Stumps tip for the title lost at home to Hampshire by two wickets, a tense finish with Jimmy Adams’ men getting across the line with only a ball to spare. The Glamorous Morgan’s Ben Wright providing the only fight with a Chuck Norris style 104. This has let to many of the partizan crowd at the Swalec now wondering “what would Ben Wright do?”

*Graham Onions is a swing bowler of international standard. He only has eyes for Mrs Onions.
