If there is one thing I enjoy more than reverse sweeping
medium paced bowlers it is taking the piss. I can quite easily wind you up and
annoy you within a minute of meeting you. I also enjoy acting stupid –
something that comes quite natural to me – a personal favourite of mine is
getting a name wrong on Facebook or Twitter and watching the bites come in...
When astronaut Neil Armstrong sadly passed away last year I
posted a status: “Sad to hear the passing of Neil Armstrong, so soon after
having his Tour de France medals taken off him too” to which a friend commented
within twenty seconds: “Wrong Armstrong you prick”. Charming.
Imagine my excitement then when I found a Twitter account
with the name of US Cricket Guy. I just knew that this was me all over and I
quickly followed him.
After reading some of his tweets – as an American cricket
fan who gets everything wrong – I saw some of the replies he was getting;
people seriously angry and upset that he just does not understand cricket and
he should “fuck off back to USA and watch baseball”.
Dan tweeted US Cricket guy to let him know our book Cricket
Banter was soon out in the land of the brave. He responded with the brilliant:
“A cricketball novel dedicated to various ballpark banter
situations! AWESOME BRO! Ask backstop Chris Read he likes books...”
As a big fan I will give you some examples of his work.
“Precipitation ceased and protection tents retracted at the
Handingley ballpark, cricketeers take to the field!” The rain stops at
Headingley…
“President Cook not engaging the double batting strategy
play gave us fans MORE cricketball and still a Testing series WIN!” Cook not
enforcing the follow-on turned out ok…
“Cricketeers if you can't sleep cause of no more IPL... The
Trophy of Champions & Cremation Series double header are coming!” Have no
fear, the Ashes are fast approaching…
“Precipitation problems at Handingley ballpark delays the
nickel flick & the fast food break is served early!” Players take an early
lunch…
I for one look forward to this fella showing up on my
Twitter timeline and even though I have no idea who is behind the account, I
have been told it may actually have some Warwickshire connections. After
interviewing and become friendly with Rikki Clarke, we can definitely rule him
out of this one!
Parody accounts can be great fun the Richie Benaud one springs to mind, but the US Cricket Guy one is just desperately unfunny.
